Overview

Kano Derrock (Banxx) is a Ugandan artist born in 1994 whose career has developed through mobility, experimentation, and sustained self-direction. In 2015, he relocated to Kampala and began shaping a clear artistic identity while navigating a new urban environment and building a foundation for long-term creative work.

He studied at Kyambogo University in Kampala and later continued his training at Michael Angello in Entebbe. Across this period, he expanded his technical range and developed a distinctive mixed-media language that combines fabric, paper, and layered surfaces with palette-knife application. The result is imagery marked by tactile depth, material contrast, and expressive tension.

By 2020, Kano broadened his visual approach further, introducing new compositional strategies that reflected an evolving conceptual direction. His work has since been presented across East Africa, including exhibitions in Tanzania and Kenya, with showings at venues such as African Galleria, African Heritage, and the National Museum in Nairobi.

In 2022, his audience extended internationally through exhibitions in the United States, Denmark, Mali, Egypt, and other locations. Alongside this visibility, he founded AFRICANO STUDIO 1 in Kampala, creating a large collaborative space for artists.

Since 2023, he has been developing a large-scale gallery and educational center in Wakiso, north of Kampala. The project reflects his ongoing commitment to artistic infrastructure, cultural exchange, and mentorship for future generations.
