Story behind the art

Book and Its Cover examines how society, particularly in African contexts, often judges people by outward appearances rather than character. The shirtless figure, marked with tattoos, scars, and piercings, embodies the humanity that is too quickly labeled “bad” or irresponsible based on surface impressions. Beside him stands a faceless mannequin in a suit, representing the so-called “acceptable cover” attire that automatically commands respect and moral approval, regardless of the person beneath. The stark contrast between raw human reality and polished façade exposes the hypocrisy of valuing image over truth. This work is a powerful reminder that identity, integrity, and goodness cannot be measured by how one looks. True character is found beneath the surface, in the stories, struggles, and humanity that society often chooses to ignore.
